You may be aware that the third largest workforce in the United States is the nonprofit sector. In 2013, for example, there were over 1.4 million nonprofit organizations registered in this country. All of these organizations combined employed more than ten percent of America’s workforce.

In some way, many people in the United States are involved with charitable and nonprofit organizations. A recent Bank of America study showed that 95.4% of Americans make charitable donations. In addition to making monetary donations, they also donate new and used items to sell in nonprofit stores that benefit different causes, such as veterans and their families. Furthermore, quite a few Americans also give the gift of their time by volunteering for a variety of organizations.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) 2015 news release on volunteering, approximately 62.6 million people volunteered between the September of 2014 and the September of 2015. These individuals volunteered a minimum of one time during this year, and were either volunteering through an organization or directly for an organization.

On average, the BLS reports that volunteers spent 52 hours engaged in volunteer activities during September 2014 through September 2015. It’s interesting to note that individuals 35 years old and younger spent an average of 36 hours volunteering over the course of that year, while volunteers aged 65 and older donated 94 hours of their time.

While many people may volunteer for a single organizations, others do so for two or more organizations. The BLS indicates that 72.0% or the volunteers were involved with one organization, while 18.3% were involved with two. It was also found that people with a higher education were also more inclined to be involved with more than one organization.

During 2015, the BLS reports that 33.1% of volunteers primarily donated their time to religious organizations. Educational or youth service volunteers accounted for 25.2%, and 14.6% were involved with social or community service organizations.

Volunteers make a significant difference for so many organizations and causes. If you need a conference meeting space for a special event to thank your volunteers or to host a fundraising event, it’s important to make arrangements for this venue in advance. When you schedule your conference meeting space well ahead of time, you will be able to focus on other important event-planning details.
